Questions and Answers

Does GhostSurf work with my modem / DSL / T1 line? Does it work with my ISP?

Yes; GhostSurf works no matter what connection you have to the Internet. It works with all ISPs (e.g. AOL, WorldNet, MSN) and all connection types (modem, DSL, cable modem, Ethernet).

Does GhostSurf anonymize e-mail I sent from another program?

No. GhostSurf just handles traffic over HTTP (that is, anything in your web browser).

When GhostSurf is running, I can't access my web-based mail (e.g. Hotmail). What's wrong?

You need to allow personal information to be sent to your web-based mail website. In the Privacy Control Center, right-click your mail site and choose "Allow everything" from the menu that appears.

GhostSurf crashed, and now I can't access the Internet. What can I do?

If GhostSurf crashes, it doesn't have a chance to tell your browser to access the Internet directly (rather than through GhostSurf); to fix this problem, restart GhostSurf and then exit it normally. This will reset your browser to accessing the Internet directly. If your browser still doesn't work, exit it and open it again.

How come my traceroute program still knows where I am? Shouldn't anonymous hubs block it?

GhostSurf just sends your browser traffic through anonymous hubs. Your traceroute program ignores GhostSurf and figures out the path as it normally does; it's not aware of anonymous hubs. What GhostSurf does block is traceroutes that try to find you (as opposed to traceroutes you run that try to find others). If you're using anonymous hubs, other people see your web traffic as coming from somewhere else. So if they do a traceroute to find you, they'll find someone else. This is exactly what you want--you can still run traceroutes, but others cannot.

What does GhostSurf do with cookies? Does it delete them, or does it block them?

When you have the "Block personal information" setting on for a site, its cookies are actually blocked; they cannot reach your computer, unless they are sent securely. This removes the need to continually wipe cookies from your computer, like some programs do. It also means that sites can't collect information on you, even between cleanings. But GhostSurf also offers the ability to wipe cookies from your computer, in the GhostWipe feature. GhostWipe removes all cookies from your computer, including those that were on your computer before you installed GhostSurf.

I selected "Route traffic through anonymous hub" for a website, and now I can't access it. What's happening?

The anonymous hubs you've selected, if any, are not working properly. You should refresh your list of anonymous hubs, so you can be sure that they're working and that they're running efficiently. You can do this manually by opening the Anonymous Hubs window, and clicking on the "Calculate hub speed" button, and then choosing the fastest ones. Or you can do this automatically by opening the Scheduler, and running the default "Refresh hubs" task.
